Understanding the various types of perfumes for women will help you when you next go to buy a new fragrance. It’s often difficult to know which perfumes to choose because even testers sometimes don’t give an accurate guide as to how they will smell on you. This is because they don’t always smell the same as the new bottle you end up with. This could be for a number of reasons. Maybe the tester has been sitting there for months and its components have altered over time.

Another reason that it could smell different is because you do. There are a number of pollutants in the air that react with the skin. So when you spray a tester on your skin in the store, it could smell completely different to when you wear it while you’re relaxing at home.

The difference between Parfum, Eau De Toilette and Eau De Parfum

One of the most confusing things when it comes to perfumes for women is the different names given to them. On your search for a new perfume you’ll be greeted with ‘Parfum’, ‘Eau De Parfum and Eau De Toilette. So what do these mean?

Basically the main difference between them is the strength of the fragrance. Parfum is the strongest concentration and it usually consists of anything from 20%-30% concentration. It will last around 6-8 hours and it is the most expensive type available.

Eau De Parfum is the second strongest with concentrations of 15%-20%. It will stay on the skin for around 4-5 hours. Then finally Eau De Toilette is the weakest concentration available with just 5%-15%. It will last for 2-3 hours which makes it perfect for nights out and special occasions. If you’re looking for a perfume that you can wear to work then Parfum would be the best option.

Understanding Fragrance notes

The other thing you need to understand are the fragrance notes. Perfumes for women contain three layers of fragrance. The base notes are the ones that settle onto the skin. They are the notes you can smell when you’ve been wearing the perfume for hours. Middle notes create the main scent of the perfume. They develop after 30 minutes and typically have quite a heavy floral smell. Then finally the top notes only last for up to 15 minutes. They are light and powdery.
