LASIK surgery can correct vision problems and save you from wearing contact lenses or glasses. However, not everyone is eligible for the treatment. Here are five possible reasons why that may turn out to be the case.
You’re on meds
If you are on medications that may affect how the wound will heal, then you may not be eligible for the surgery. People who suffer from diabetes, have an auto-immune disease like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, or HIV are not good candidates for the operation. Your doctor may recommend something else instead.
You’re not an adult
People under the age of 18 are not allowed to undergo the procedure, the FDA says. If you are really set on getting the operation done, wait until you reach the age of maturity.
You’re pregnant
If you are carrying a child or breastfeeding, then this isn’t the right treatment for you. If you’re pregnant, the medication you will take may affect the baby. The same reason applies if you are still breastfeeding, since anything you take in will enter the baby’s system as well.
You participate in contact sports
If you normally engage in activities wherein blows to the face and eyes are a normal occurrence, then this isn’t the ideal option for you. Consult your doctor about what your other options are.
You have a condition
If you have blepharitis, large pupils, thin corneas, and severe dry eyes, then LASIK surgery can aggravate whatever existing condition you have. You need to look into other options for treatment.
These are just some of the common reasons why you may not be a good candidate for LASIK surgery. To know more about the procedure and to find out whether it’s the right solution for you, consult with a doctor.
